The NASDAQ and AMEX markets are both based in New York City. The NASDAQ was first formed in 1971 and merged with the International Stock Exchange (ISE) in 1992, forming the first intercontinental securities exchange. The two exchanges later merged with Amex in 1998, forming the NASDAQ-Amex Market Group. The Amex and NYSE operate similarly, with trading carried out on the same floor.
Both the NYSE and the AMEX are auction markets, and trades on both exchanges are conducted through specialists and brokers. These specialists bring buyers and sellers together to ensure a fair market price. A majority of trading is conducted through derivatives, which depend on the value of a security or index.
