THIS IS AMAZING: The Netherlands’ prime minister just visited Mayor Mamdani in New York City, and the meeting looked like exactly the kind of global solidarity between progressive leaders worth celebrating.
Rob Jetten, who made history as the youngest person and the first from his party to become Dutch prime minister when he took office in February 2026, shared the visit himself.
“It was absolutely wonderful to meet Mayor Mamdani here in his city,” Jetten wrote. “We visited a community center in the West Village together. The Netherlands and New York are, of course, historically inextricably linked.”
He pointed to shared challenges the two places face together.
“In these times, we share the same challenges,” Jetten said. “For example, when it comes to the urgent need to build far more affordable housing and ensure a safe and livable community for everyone.”
The two leaders also talked about something bigger than local policy.
“We also spoke about the great importance that both the Netherlands and New York attach to the rights of the LGBTQ community and the defense of those rights, at a time when those rights are under pressure worldwide,” Jetten wrote.
The photos say it all. Two leaders, genuinely smiling, shaking hands in front of greenery in the West Village, followed by a warm visit inside a community center surrounded by books and neighbors.
This is what it looks like when leaders from different countries find real common ground, not through grand political theater, but by walking through a neighborhood together and talking about the things that actually affect people’s daily lives.
