THIS IS AMAZING: Barack Obama just put words to something a lot of people have been feeling, laying out exactly how unimaginable Trump’s press ban would have looked if any past president had tried it.
During a speech at Colgate University, Obama didn’t hold back.
“My imagination could not foresee some of the stuff that’s going on right now,” Obama said. “I’m trying to think what would have happened if I had said, ‘You know what, Fox News? You’re out of here.'”
Think about that for a second.
Obama’s point cuts right to the heart of the double standard. If he had ever tried to ban a major news outlet from the White House simply because he didn’t like its coverage, it’s hard to imagine the backlash wouldn’t have been immediate and overwhelming.
Instead, Trump did exactly that, banning CNN, MS NOW, and Politico from the White House, revoking their press credentials, and calling their reporting fake news. He’s since indicated the ban could extend even further, potentially including The New York Times.
The targeted outlets aren’t backing down either, announcing plans to challenge the ban directly.
Obama’s warning wasn’t just about the press ban in isolation. He connected it to a broader pattern of unchecked power, arguing that accepting actions like this chips away at basic democratic standards most Americans have taken for granted.
This is why voices like Obama’s still matter. He’s not just criticizing from the sidelines, he’s naming the exact double standard that lets this kind of behavior slide, and reminding people what a free press is actually supposed to look like.
Thank you, President Obama, for standing up for a free press and saying plainly what needed to be said.
