THIS IS HUGE: The Detroit Free Press, Michigan’s Largest Newspaper, Just Called Mike Rogers an “Extremist” and an “Election Denier” While Endorsing Abdul El-Sayed for Senate

Michigan’s biggest newspaper just picked a side, and the editorial board didn’t hold anything back. The Detroit Free Press endorsed Democrat Abdul El-Sayed for U.S. Senate, and in the same editorial, went straight at his opponent, Mike Rogers. “Everything you’ve heard about Michigan’s U.S. Senate race is true: An extremist is asking voters to send him to Washington, masking an agenda far out of step with Michigan’s mainstream under the pretense of normalcy.” Then they made it clear who they meant. “There’s an extremist in this race, all right, and it’s the election denier who’s willing to deprive Michiganders of essential rights.” Read that again. The largest newspaper in the state called Mike Rogers an extremist and an election denier, in writing, six weeks before Election Day. They also criticized his positions on health care, tariffs, reproductive rights and same-sex marriage, and questioned whether he’d accept election results. And on Abdul El-Sayed? The board pointed to his public health record and his focus on health care, labor rights and getting corporate influence out of politics, saying he offers voters optimism and a real alternative to the political status quo. “On Nov. 3, Michiganders should vote to send ABDUL EL-SAYED to the U.S. Senate.” Michigan is one of the biggest Senate races in the country, and this endorsement just made it a lot harder for Rogers to pretend he’s the “common sense” candidate.
